Rehabilitation services

Rehabilitation expert services are provided for all ages; children and adolescents, working age population and senior citizens. Our experts are physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, nutrition therapists, assistive technology specialists and rehabilitation instructors. Rehabilitation is always closely linked to the treatment of illness and injury. Our goal is to promote the patient’s ability to function and quality of life.

Physiotherapy

If you suffer from musculosceletal problems (pain in back, neck or extremities), you can visit the physiotheraphist without a doctors referral.

The physiotherapist examines you, give you advice how to cope with the pain and advises you how to perform individual exercises. The physiotherapist can – if needed – write a certificate for sick leave.

Advanced Rehabilitation Ward

The teams on the advanced rehabilitation wards are multi-professional and operate under the responsibility of the physiatry department. The wards mainly treat neurological, orthopedic and geriatric patients. Intensive rehabilitation is usually given after, among other things, a stroke, a major operation or an accident. We can also receive patients for targeted rehabilitation from other specialist areas.

The ward employs nurses, practical nurses, a physician, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, a speech therapist, a ward secretary, a head nurse and an assistant head nurse. We work closely with rehabilitation therapists, social workers, nutritionists and clinical nurses, and consult with other specialists as needed.

Please note the following information

Admittance to the advanced rehabilitation ward is by referral only, which can be written by a physician in specialist care or primary care. The ward physician will decide on whether the patient will be offered a period of rehabilitation.

Advanced Rehabilitation Ward

Nutritionists work with adult and pediatric patients who suffer from diseases where the only form of care is nutritional treatment (e.g. celiac disease and food allergies), or where nutritional treatment is crucial in terms of good care (e.g. kidney diseases, eating disorders, inflammatory bowel diseases, pulmonary diseases, diabetes, and cancer). Nutritionists are also responsible for nutritional therapy for neurological patients and patients who are at risk of malnutrition.

A nutritionist investigates the patient’s nutritional status and draws up an appropriate diet with regard to the patient’s disease and individual needs. In addition, the nutritionist supports and motivates the patient to follow the diet and helps him or her in challenging situations.

A nutritionist can be seen in specialist health care via a referral from Vaasa Central Hospital’s attending physician.

Speech therapy

Speech therapy is provided by a licensed speech therapist. A referral is always needed before visiting one of our speech therapists. Children can receive a referral via the child welfare clinic or school health service, while adults can be referred by a doctor.

The goal of speech therapy is to improve the client’s functional and communication skills in everyday life. Speech therapy is carried out in collaboration with your family and your close surroundings.

The speech therapist assesses and treats difficulties with:

· speech

· language

· communication/interaction

· the voice

· reading and writing

· eating and swallowing

· oral motor skills
